Trying not to get screwed by getting a "pre-hire" and then going out of state and finding out I have no job after all. Who hires prior to orientation?

No one. YOu are not hired by trucking companies until you have completed orientation

If you are meaning that companies they say they can hire you and actually mean it, there aren't very many at all. Western Express will. Or at least they did with me. Usually thought you can ask them to verify all of your information before you actually go to orientation so that there aren't any surprises like what you describe of getting there and being sent home. Basically you still stand a chance at the same thing happening to you again. Use your best judgement I guess would be the only advice you could get.
