pulleys

greetings!!! does anyone know what causes pulleys to go bad? i have a1998 freightliner with a detroit 60 series and i just went thru 2 belts because my alternator pulley and the one above it seized up. i need help with info in regards to how expensive are the pulleys, is it more technical than that, etc. any advice will be well taken. thank you.
