The Truck Stop : A newbie at age 56? Help!

A newbie at age 56? Help!

by oldnewbiewannabe » Oct. 20, 7:29 pm

Even though I'm not a youngblood I've decided to give trucking a try. I'm single (divorced)and my only child is 35 (so hometime is not a big issue). I've never been arrested for anything in my life, have not had a moving violation for over 15 years, and I'm pretty healthy. I have a Class B CDL (P & S endorsements) and currently drive a school bus.
I'm preregistered to begin commercial driving school next summer at junior college near my home. The course last for 6 weeks and requires 180 total hours of classroom instruction combined with driving experience.
Even though money is important to me, I can do quite well with $400-500 per week net income. I certainly wouldn't turn down more but I have no house note or rent, no car payment, and precious little in the way of debt.
I would greatly appreciate responses from veteran drivers and other newbies to the following questions: (1) How much of a hindrance will my age be with respect to getting hired by a reputable, stable company? and (2) Will it be helpful, as far as getting miles goes,
that I am pretty much "footloose and fancy free"?

Thanks in advance,

I'm 59 and don't feel it's a hinderance. As long as you can pass the physical you can drive. I would rather hire a single person for the reason you mention.

no way go for it... there is always a need for good safe drivers out there. if your not picky and you dont complain too much and you drive hard but safe you can expect to earn around 600-700 weekly as a solo to start or 850-1000 as a team at 6000+ miles a week. the real fun as a newbie for me was being able to see the country and sights.

like the other driver said, as long as you can pass your physical your good. you may have a problem getting in any company if your on certain prescription meds. they will let you know.

you will be lucky to make two or three hundred a week when you first start. your age is a plus. whatever you do, dont lease a truck. be a company driver. if you lease, you wont earn a dime. but the companys are going to tell you youre going to get rich if you lease. dont you believe it!

You are exactly what trucking companies want. Your age is a plus as long as you are physically able. I haul dry van and physically it is not hard. If loading or unloading is required most large companies will pay lumpers to do it. Unless you are in great shape I would stay away from flatbeds.

Your age should not be a problem if u can pass the dot physical. Ur lack of trucking experince my be in question. But please do all the research you can before choosing a company.

Most reputable companies will consider hiring you based on your driving record, especially number of miles accident-free, rather than your age. Maturity and responsibility can be a benefit to some companies as well. Best of luck to you!
